Financing is another factor mentioned by
nearly every remodeler one talks with, and
easing of lending requirements would be a
distinct relief, most say. "[Homeowners] still
do not have easy access to money even
though the rates are low," Herriges says.
"We are fortunate that essentially all our
projects are financed by homeowners with
cash of some sort — where they're getting
it from, I don't know. Five or six years ago
we would often work through a bank or a
title company on these projects, and we're
not seeing that right now."
Herriges doesn't see home builders who
have entered the remodeling market as
especially troubling competition. "I welcome professional competition. However,
the unqualified, unprofessional person
entering the remodeling industry is competition because they do not have the training or the experience to deliver a quality
product and can end up spoiling the image
of the remodeling industry," he says.
