he landscape surrounding a contempo- rary home in Dexter, Michigan, features a pond and several mature trees, but a dark and uninviting living room obscured the scene. Seeking to create better sightlines, the owners contracted PLY Architecture to design a two-story addition that opens up the first floor. PLY partnered with Meadowlark Design+Build in Ann Arbor to execute the plan. "It was kind of like a baseball hat that was pulled low over your eyes. A good share of the view was cut off be- cause the gable of the home came down to some fairly low windows," says Doug Selby, CEO of Meadowlark. "[e living room] is their preferred area to sit in the house—it overlooks the forest and the pond. e concept was to sort of lift the brow of that hat, so that you could [see] all the way to the top of the trees." A reconfigured front entry now flows into the expansive living room, which incorporates floor-to-ceiling windows and a custom acute-angle corner extension to provide dramatic looks. e bigger windows, combined with the angular addition and a refreshed roofline, produce a unique exterior façade that supplies necessary weight to balance the proportions of the 1970s residence.
