His ability to satisfy deadlines and exceed expectations de- spite not operating a true design-build company generated praise within the industry. "at's something you're always having to look at—how you get all this stuff done [on] that budget," Webber says. "I think a project like this would be so much harder to do [today]. It just seems like there are fewer people available to do construction, [and] it takes a special [kind of ] sub- contractor to want to focus on all the detail." CLEARING A HURDLE With the project nearing completion, Webber had to com- mission a survey confirming the height of the structure and its compliance with local building code. He discov- ered a framing issue early on during construction had rendered the house 7 inches too tall, meaning the firm would have to appear before the city council and request an after-the-fact variance to account for the disparity. "We had already gotten six variances just to start con- struction. Luckily, everyone seemed to like what we were doing, so we got a lot of positive feedback; but people were also kind of tired of us being under construction," Webber explains. "We went into the city with our tail between our legs." with a walnut laminate and concrete to create a bold accent to the otherwise muted color palette. MANAGING ASPIRATION Sustainability became a priority for the client before she met Webber, so he made sure to include features that maintain harmony with the environment. e heating and cooling system relies on a ground-source (geother- mal) pump that runs its loops through the shell of the swimming pool and provides a more efficient method to condition living space inside the home and heat the pool water outside. A greywater recycling system ensures the landscaping stays green, and the application of a tight vapor barri- er, spray-foam insulation and low-VOC finishes helps produce a healthy atmosphere inside the house. Webber also designed the home to take on rainwater collection as well as solar photovoltaic technology if the owner opts to pursue those renewable energy options in the future. "Unfortunately she doesn't have great exposure for so- lar—she's got too much shade over there," Webber says.
