"Usually a good outcome involves figuring out why they want it," Carnemark says. "Our job is to help them uncover the 'why' as opposed to what they initially tell you they want. It's really the feeling they want. It's never specifically what they say. It's always different than that. Phase II of the project (not included in the Phase I price and also completed by Carnemark) was the design and construction of a massive composite deck with sleek wire railings. e remodel also included a new powder room and a combination laundry room and storage area. Neither of these rooms is seen in the accompanying photographs. "Overall, we drastically improved the spatial and vi- sual flow of the first-floor space. Critical to the design was a clear view to the home's private outdoor space and swimming pool. e first-floor bedroom was replaced by an open family room with fabulous backyard views," notes the company's 2015 application for a Master Design Award, which netted a Gold Award within the Whole- House Project Under $300,000 category. "Further, a barn door serves as a stylish way to close off the kitchen for privacy while preparing meals." In the end, the project, with all the complexity of its construction and of its newly designed spaces is decep- tively clean and simple. It is a reflection of the owners' very keen design aesthetic, says Carnemark.
