T
he 1,740-sq.-ft. Alma
Rose Tasting Room is a
former warehouse space
transformed into an up-
scale wine tasting room flled with
natural light to create a welcom-
ing, comfortable atmosphere.
Instead of a large bar in the main
tasting area, wine guides pour at
small tasting tables with 30- by
40-in. reclaimed Douglas fr slabs.
Metal bases with diatomite rocks
serve as foot rests, and a 19-ft. re-
claimed Douglas fr bench pro-
vides additional seating. Te orig-
inal concrete foor was repolished
and left exposed. To help with
noise, a sound engineer recom-
mended 45 10-ft.-long perforated
steel panels hung 17 ft. above the
fnished foor to absorb, rather
than refect, sound so customers
could enjoy quiet conversation.
Gauze material above the panels
further absorbs sound. A 1,600-lb.
sliding entry door with four re-
tractable wood-framed glass pan-
els needed a special team of labor-
ers and lifts to properly hang.
Another challenge was safely in-
stalling Olivia — a live, three-ton
olive tree — which was brought
in through the fnished entry door,
over the fnished foor, and re-
quired a special reach fork lift and
12 people to coordinate the proper
placement. Te owner also re-
quested a substantial chimney to
match the grandeur of a Rumford
freplace. After the Rumford was
in place, a 10-ft.-tall, 700-lb. steel
industrial pipe was carefully in-
stalled to house the three-wall
chimney required by code.
