What would be your ideal project to complete? We specialize in complex, one-of-a-kind projects, whether it be an estate compound with multiple buildings and landscaping or a spectacular master bathroom. Our ideal is any project allowing us to be challenged while get- ting to know great clients and their families; working with talented architects, designers and craftsmen; working with new and dif- ferent materials and learning new techniques; and successfully bringing everything together in a well-executed, efcient manner where ev- eryone's expectations were met or exceeded. When and why did you join Remodelers Advantage? We joined R A in 1996. A few years earlier, our Remodeler's Council brought Linda Case to town for a seminar. I was inspired that day with a new vision for our business and bought her book, Remodelers Business Basics. A few years later when Linda invited us to join R A I was honored to have the opportunity. What has been the most important lesson you've taken away from your peers at Remodelers Advantage? It's difcult to identify the single most important because there are so many. I've had the privi- lege of sharing and learning from the brightest minds in our industry. I know for sure if I hadn't learned to be a good listener I would have missed out on invaluable life and career impacting les- sons taught by some really smart and caring folks. After almost 20 years of membership, I keep learning and fne-tuning our business as I'm constantly challenged by my peers. we never rested on our laurels or were compla- cent about what the future may hold. What is the best advice you've received in your career? I regularly remind myself of these two sayings that have great life and career application: ¡ ¡ If you can't fnd the time to do it correctly, how will you ever fnd the time to do it over again? ¡ ¡ It's how you fnish that matters. What motivates you every day? My primary motivation, without question, is my wonderful family. At Whitlock Builders, each day is a new challenge. I'm motivated by our great staf and the incredible opportunities we have to make a diference in people's lives. | What does your gut tell you about our current economic situation and when it will improve? We are coming of of a record year in 2014, and 2015 looks good so far. Leads are up, they are better-qualifed, and job sizes are grow- ing. People are purchasing less on cost than post-recession, looking for value and service with a better understanding of the real cost and getting what they pay for. Te economy is still somewhat volatile, but what else is new? I believe the lessons learned have shaped our new economy, and, as a whole, we are smarter and better of. Having said that, in my 33-year career, there have been many up and down cycles, and that will never end. My father, who founded our company, lived through the Great Depression, and there was never a time he was comfortable with the status quo.
