Bathroom More Than $75,000
Landis Construction, Washington, D.C., landisconstruction.com
Project name: Condominum Bathroom
Location: Washington, D.C.
Square footage: 94
Cost: $250,000
The wife, who is in a wheelchair, asked that the ground-level condominium
renovation be handicap-accessible while not looking institutional. Kitchen work
involved closing a service door leading from the apartment hallway directly
into the kitchen; the range was placed where the door had been. Space between
cabinets was widened to 42 in. to provide more maneuvering space. Shallower
cabinets make items easier to reach. The remodel also moved the entrance to
the kitchen from the living room to the front entry hall and widened it to 36
in. Half-light doors with louvers below allow natural light and air. A flagstone
ramp from the apartment to patio creates easy access to the couple's garden.
Hallways throughout were widened to 42 in. with 36-in. doorways. The apart-
ment's two small bathrooms were married into one large bathroom. The curb-
less shower with a glass shower door that swings both directions has a handheld shower and rain head. The sloped floor keeps water in
and flowing toward the drain.

Project name: Daring Style Master Bath
Location: Carlsbad, Calif.
Square footage: 142
Cost: $85,000
This master bath blends daring modern style with mid-century touches that
introduce character and energy to the space. The young couple desired a luxurious
and inspiring space while being safe and comfortable for their toddler. Wanting
to avoid neutrals, yellow and blue saturates the space and is further enhanced
with natural light. Existing beams in the ceiling were integrated to add visual
interest, and Shoji-style sliding doors provide privacy while retaining light. Design
features include bright lemon yellow oversized wall tiles that alternate between a
glossy and matte finish and a periwinkle blue vanity. Hand-blown glass pendants
illuminate that area. Other features include a freestanding tub, open shower,
walk-in closet and hidden storage behind the vanity mirrors. The wood flooring
in the sink area transitions to a sloped floor to accommodate the open shower.
