Landis Construction, Washington, D.C., landisconstruction.com Project name: Potomac Green Project Location: Potomac, Md. Square footage: 7,610 Cost: $1.2 million The couple completed a whole-house remodel using green materials and practices. A vertical closed-loop geothermal system is installed in three 6-in.-diameter, 400-ft.-deep wells, each of which works with a different zone in the house. There are 80 4- by 2-ft. solar photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roof of the main house and on the garage. This covers 25 to 30 percent of the home's energy use; the rest is sold back to the utility company. Wood windows with aluminum cladding are argon-filled, and the furred walls have closed cell spray foam insulation, as does the roof structure. Dual-flush toilets, low-flow fittings and faucets in the bathrooms reduce water use.
