Project name: Digby Street
Location: San Francisco
Square footage: 200
Cost: $140,000
Although large with an eat-in area, the kitchen was closed off from
the rest of the house, which boasted views of the San Francisco skyline.
The owners wanted to open it to the living and dining rooms but be
able to close it off for more formal gatherings. The remodel allowed
the kitchen to open to the hallway to visually expand the space and
create bar height seating for larger gatherings. Pocket doors hide away
in the walls to offer kitchen privacy when needed. A large closet at the
end of the stair that blocked views from the hallway was removed, and
the top floor has full access to the expansive views. Sliding doors glide
along a ceiling track, allowing the corner to disappear and the views
to remain unobstructed. The counter drifts up and over various cabi-
nets and splitting where necessary, coming together again at the end.

Project name: Pynes Kitchen
Location: Salt Lake City
Square footage: 400
Cost: $73,500
The original kitchen in this 1940s home was in the front and
felt separated from the rest of the house. The family wanted a
kitchen where everyone could gather. To accomplish this, the
kitchen was moved to the rear of the home, allowing it to be
attached to a new family room addition. A major challenge was
putting an added garage bay in the original kitchen's location
and placing the new kitchen behind the existing single-car
garage. A restrictive side yard didn't allow for an addition to
the side. Large steel beams and metal decking support the new
loads of the garage, and a new steel post in the basement had
to be located in an existing wall. One of the new steel beams
cantilevers beyond the post to catch a perpendicular steel
beam. A new concrete floor was poured and waterproofed
to protect the living space below. Custom ceiling grids were
carefully located and planned to coordinate with the new
custom cabinetry and lighting locations.
