Project name: Tuscan Transformation
Location: Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
Square footage: 275
Cost: $242,593
Vanberg Construction partnered with
Linda Medina Interior Design to remodel a
kitchen with Tuscan influence. Everything
was removed, except the tile floor, and
started over again to meet the clients'
needs. Notable elements include on-site
hand-hewed ceiling beams, real stonework
and a 500-lb. custom copper vent hood with
bronze strapping and rivets. To install the
hood, the island was boxed in plywood and
a temporary scaffold built over the island.
Six workers then lifted, maneuvered and
held the hood in place until it was secured
to the ceiling.

Room Remodel

Project name: Mud Room Reinvented
Location: Cedar Park, Texas
Square footage: 210
Cost: $74,285
A family with young twin boys had a laundry room off the
garage entrance with enough space for a small mud sink and
refrigerator. It also doubled as a backpack and coat drop-off
zone. Removing the wall between the existing room and
an underutilized spare bedroom created extra space and
new Alder cubbies and a bench provide storage for shoes,
coats and bags. The refrigerator, sink and washer/dryer are
lined along the opposite wall with overhead storage. The
space also includes an apron sink, marble folding counter,
improved lighting and a three-panel glass door leading to
the backyard. One of the main challenges was marrying the
new design with the existing two-story floor trusses. New
support beams cantilever through existing spaces, which
provides needed support for the second floor.
