LinkedIn LinkedIn member Shawn McCadden posted an article titled "OSHA visits contractor 3 times in 33 days, subs don't want to come back." The remodeling business referred to has embraced worker safety and OSHA requirements, but the company's owner says, "My employees have the equipment and know what they should and should not be doing. It's part of playing the game of being in business." QR LinkedIn members weigh in on the issue: "I have done things in the past that I would fire a subcontractor for today. OSHA plays a critical role and actually makes jobsites much safer for everyone on the job. I actually dumped a chop saw in the dumpster because it did not have a safety shield on it. I told the subcontractor if he could not afford to buy a new saw I would buy it and we would work it out over a couple of jobs. I use subs for everything and will not let them put my company at risk." Kevin Brady "I will never forget the NARI luncheon meeting at our local chapter where an OSHA guy was showing us about worker safety. It was my job to help him set up the equipment, and our meeting room did not have a plug in the center of the room for the AV equipment. I pointed this out to the guy giving the presentation, and he said to plug it in the wall and he would just step over it. No tape, no cord shield, just pure common sense. They [OSHA employees] really are practical people, doing a really difficult task of enforcement." Gerry Gerber, CR "I have met some inspectors that were practical, while others were just out to throw their weight around." Tom Dealy, CAPS "Seems to me that the fines and repeated visits were excessive, which makes me wonder about what was said to the inspector by the site staff. If you have respectful conversations, you should only get warnings first for these sort of infractions, in my experience."
