Breath of Fresh Air Across the country remodelers build exceptional outdoor living spaces to help clients cook, lounge and entertain. by Kyle Clapham COMPANY: NEIL KELLY COMPANY DESIGNER: MATT SIPES LOCATION: WEST LINN, OREGON SQUARE FOOTAGE: 900 PROJECT COST: $229,000 The homeowners wanted their new outdoor living space to employ an open concept while being shield- ed from the elements year-round. They sought a design that could blend with the existing house and would look natural in their forested backyard. The existing deck needed fresh boards and guardrails as well as some framing repair in order to support the weight of any new decking. A new roof, supported by the house and columns set directly on the ground, helps minimize the weight added to the existing deck. Maintaining the same footprint, its angles were used to create more seating and a custom-built storage bench. Clerestory win- dows between the two roof planes allow additional light into the space and protect against the wet climate of the Pacific Northwest.
