In addition, we need to get the word out about the strong code of ethics that all of our members pledge to uphold—that there's value to the homeowner in working with our certified professionals. And that is the message we must capitalize on. QR: What's the next step to get consumers asking for NARI contractors and also to get more contractors involved in education and certification? Pekel: That's the million-dollar question, isn't it? Right now, we are a very successful trade association that has an enormous growth potential. There are tens of thousands of remodelers out there. Why aren't they all NARI members? Right now our marketing efforts are very conservative when it comes to contractors and to consumers. So we need to focus our messaging on only those things that are meaningful and that get attention. That's why certifications and education are Pekel: Having built a successful remodeling company from scratch and being a Master Certified Remodeler allows me to see what NARI does through the same pair of glass- es of our members. I believe it provides unmatched insight into what our members experience, what our members need and what the components of success in remod- eling look like. QR: When you took over, in your estimation, what condition did you find the association in terms of fitting the needs of remodelers around the country? Pekel: I think we understood that we were underserving our members. So we began to examine immediately what the association stands for and to clearly identify the commu- nity of individuals we serve. There are things that NARI does extremely well that remain a well-kept secret. Those things primarily involve our education and certification. We have world-class certification programs and designations that can help build more successful remodelers. We need to get that transition happened for me is the more that I became involved in the operation of the association, the more I began to fall in love with the opportunity to be involved with NARI as its CEO.
