on the cover of QR, now it is more frequent. e shift toward modern design is quite dis- cernable. It is even reflected in the comments and feedback from our distinguished judging panel. [See page 24 for the full story.] Dave Roberts, AIA, sums up the trends he saw judging the 2018 Master Design Awards this way: "Clean and crisp designs, unclut- tered spaces, natural light and quality lighting design, and vessel bathtubs." Remodeler Marc Black echoes that point, noting he was "drawn" to modern finishes and bright - er colors among the projects "dominated with white, gray and beige tones. A mix of materials was also a trend we saw (woods, glass and metals)." is is not to say that tastes and trends have gone all the way to modern. At the time, it was a clear break with most images presented in the magazine. Most of the homes featured were great old houses brought up to date. Clean lines and bright, modern spaces were still a rarity. en and now, room ad- ditions and whole- house remodels con- sisted of beautiful kitchen/great room combinations and open floor plans. e primary rea- son for putting the Farnsworth House on the cover was our unique opportunity to speak with a team of architects in charge of a $7 million restoration of the home after it had been damaged in a flood. But it really looked and felt great to put something so unabashedly modern on the cover of QR. e reaction at the time was strong. Finley Perry, AIA, owner of FH Perry Builders in Massachusetts, wrote to congratulate us. As an architect, he could appreciate the deliber- ations discussed in the story among top minds on solutions for Van der Rohe's butterfly roof that drained through the center of the house. Today, the renovation of millions of mid-century modern homes is underway. e style and look of homes built in the '50s, '60s, and '70s is appealing to family homebuyers. And architects and remodelers are bringing them up to date in record numbers. Many are winners of our 2018 Master Design Awards.
