Whole House Less Than $300,000 GOLD HK ARCHITECTS Chattanooga, Tenn. hkarchitects.net Project name: Winston Renovation and Addition Project location: Chattanooga, Tenn. Square footage before: 1,700 Square footage after: 2,100 Project cost: $250,000 After purchasing a 1950s bungalow, a newly married couple wanted to transform the home into a modern farmhouse with a connection to nature. e existing floor plan did not allow many views of the outdoors, and low ceilings exacerbated the segmented layout of living space. While the list of improvements grew longer, the budget stayed tight, so the money had to be spent strategically. e redesign brought the site into the living spaces, especially with the addition of both front and rear porches. An open floor plan and the use of natural and reclaimed materials helps bring more natural light into the house throughout the day. Local craftspeople created specialty items for the remodeling project, including concrete countertops, custom barn wood pieces and steel windows.
