to attract and retain talent over the long term. is is the hard work that takes years but has been shown to pay dividends for the long haul. With some notable exceptions, there is very little talk of investing in new, emerging tech- nologies (like solar power or drone-generated estimates). Such technologies could put com- panies on a more dynamic growth path, and perhaps solidify and grow a firm's reputation and prestige in the market. Lastly, there was very little discussion of keeping profits in the company—salting it away for a rainy day. It is remarkable how quickly the les- sons from a decade ago recede. Some of you have surely seen the recent film about Winston Churchill, "Darkest Hour," and the rap- id-fire decisions he had to make in his first few days as prime minister, a time when the U.K. had to either capitulate to Hitler or hold the line. A quote from Churchill was featured in the film: "Success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts." We are in a success phase of the remodeling and housing cycles. If you make good, long- term decisions today, you have an enormous opportunity to fortify your companies and make them built to last. e courageous and wise decisions now, like investing in programs to attract and retain your people and your trades, are certainly worth considering. | ext month we will present, for the 40th consecutive year, our annu- al listing of the industry's largest firms—the QR Top 500. And be- cause of the preliminary work that is required, I have the privilege of reading many hundreds of your applications in advance. In particular, I am interested in the challenges and opportu- nities cited in those documents. Most of what is being reported will not surprise any of you. On the challenge side: Skilled and unskilled labor is in critically short supply. Building ma- terial prices—par- ticularly lumber and steel—are rising pre- cipitously. Smart re- modelers are raising prices and finding ways to successfully pass along these add- ed costs to clients. On the opportu- nity side: e good times keep rolling. Remodeling is now as strong, possibly stronger, than it's ever been. A tax cut for 2018 and beyond is boosting business enthusiasm. And, because most of you are true entrepre- neurs, many see nothing but opportunity ahead and new places to invest those profits. Some are laying the groundwork for expand- ing into new markets. Some see a chance to expand the scope of services they offer. Indeed, these are times when dreams of being bigger and of being best occur most often. ese are times when it's good to be in the business. And yet I can detect, in the responses of many large- and medium-sized firms, a tad bit of hubris creeping into the picture. ere is very little men- tion of investing time and money in programs Success Is Not Final N If you make good, long-term decisions today, you have an enormous opportunity to fortify your companies and make them built to last. 8 July 2018 QR QualifiedRemodeler.com EDITORIAL DIRECTOR'S NOTE Patrick L.
