GRAYNE SHINGLES
Grayne Engineered Shake & Siding, a rigid
PVC composite, provides natural cedar re-
placement and features a high-performance
cap that resists moisture absorption. e prod-
uct will never cup, curl, crack or split, and
it never needs painting. Grayne harnesses a
proprietary coating process to deliver an au-
thentic, multihued appearance that captures
distinct color differences in aged cedar.
"We actually took natural cedar, cut with
the plain saw cut method, and integrated that
[texture] into the system," says Mike Maurer,
director of product development for Grayne.
"So they are exact castings of natural cedar.
We're seeing a lot of whole-house applications,
and it's accenting high-end jobs."
e prefinished product comes in two va-
rieties: a 5-inch white cedar shingle and a
7.5-inch red cedar shingle. Grayne created a
system that consists of 72 unique wood grains
on eight different panel configurations. Each
profile offers the correct color palette and
shingle exposure; the white cedar showcases
grays and coastal colors, while the red cedar
highlights richer and darker colors.
Contractors who use the product for the
first time can receive a rebate through a pro-
gram called Grayne Bucks, Maurer explains.
e shingle includes a continuous nail hem
along the top of the panel and does not require
batten strips like natural cedar. Contractors
just have to fasten Grayne every 10 inches,
and its cavity back design allows for airflow
behind each panel to prevent mold.
"Our first year we tripled the revenue
forecast, and that was with the white cedar,"
Maurer says. "It did so well that contractors
nationwide were screaming for the red cedar
program. We just introduced that program
and we haven't shut the line down; it's been
running nonstop. We think we've found the
secret sauce—deliver premium aesthetics at
the same price as natural cedar."
