shingles is the extensive maintenance—you have to spray, paint and stain [them] and replace damaged ones—and it gets expen- sive. e typical homeowner spends about $4,000 or $5,000 every five years to do this maintenance." Last year, the company launched an indi- vidual shingle version of Cedar Impressions that mixes in variegated colors to imitate real wood grains, like eastern white cedar and western red cedar. e individual shingles, available in one-inch increments from 4 inches to 8 inches, enhance the traditional panels, which average 4 to 5.5 feet in length but still display the air of real cedar. CertainTeed replicates actual wood grains onto products through a process called TrueTexture, in which the manufacturer transfers the exact texture of cedar wood shake boards to its polymer-based siding. e wood grains offered in Cedar Impressions include Perfection, a softer texture; Sawmill, a subtle texture that shows blade marks; and Rough Split, the most aggressive texture. e company presents a master craftsman designation to contractors who review a large manual about its products and pass a test afterward. Contractors can receive a five-star credential if they pursue a more detailed, in-person training program; pro- cure the proper business insurances such as workers' compensation; and pass another test in addition to the master craftsman examination. ROYAL CELECT After smaller regional launches, Royal Building Products introduced Celect Cellular Composite Siding nationwide in 2012. e PVC product line seeks to replicate the beauty and aesthetics of wood while reducing main- tenance and boosting durability. Royal can form Celect into a variety of shapes, including 4- and 7-inch clapboard; 8-inch board-and- batten; and 7-inch shake. "It comes down to consumers—homeown- ers—wanting curb appeal," says Steve Booz, vice president of new product development and product management for Royal. "What we offer with Celect is architectural opportu - nity. You can really create something different for a homeowner."
