much different than any of the other sub-
stitute [cedar] products," says Ralph Bruno,
Tando president. "When a house is installed
with Beach House Shake, you cannot tell that
it's not real wood."
Beach House Shake features an authentic
5-inch reveal along with a protective UV
coating and resists all moisture—including
rain, snow and sea spray—making it ideal for
coastal homes. e product offers a 50-year
warranty against rot, decay and split, as well
as a 10-year like-new warranty that protects
against adverse effects caused by the sun, rain
and other weather elements.
Tando introduced Beach House Shake in
a natural cedar color called Sandcastle and
released the product in New England initially.
e company has been ramping up capacity,
and Beach House Shake should be available
throughout North America before the end of
the summer, Bruno says.
e lightweight panels allow for one-person
installation and do not require any special
tools or fastener systems. "Some of the folks
who were installing wood or other products
that are heavy, those are two-man installs,"
Bruno adds. "Contractors love working with
Beach House Shake; it's very easy to install,
[and] they get no callbacks. Because they can
install it faster, it can also generally increase
their profits as well, because they're spending
less time on the job installing the siding."
CEDAR IMPRESSIONS
For years, homeowners around the coun-
try have used Cedar Impressions from
CertainTeed as an accent, such as in the gables
of their house. Now the company sees more
consumers applying the product as siding
for their entire home because of the precise
textures and sharp edges formed as the base
material—polypropylene—is molded, says
Brian Kirn, product manager at CertainTeed.
"It combines the premier look of a cedar
shingle siding with none of the maintenance,"
he adds. "e biggest downside to real cedar
CERTAINTEED replicates actual wood grains
onto Cedar Impressions through a process
called TrueTexture, which transfers the exact
texture of real cedar wood shake boards to its
polymer-based siding products.
