cabinetry, etc. It provides all the benefits of a urethane coating and the urethane resin. And there is less odor than with a solvent-based ve- hicle." Winter also notes that because it is ure- thane-based, the product can be used outside. Similarly, Sherwin-Williams has extended its Emerald line of interior paints to include a low VOC urethane trim enamel. "It is our finest trim enamel," Winter says. "It is water-based and great for casings, crown moulding, under it all, and that is how we offer value in a number of categories." INTERIORS: COLOR DEPTH AND EASY HIDE Interior paint innovations tend to focus on two areas: First, rich interior colors now fa- vored by designers are getting more consis- tency and depth. Second, there is a focus on repaint activity and how best to hide colors and imperfections under a single coat of paint. To that end there are new offerings from PPG Paints, Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore, among others. Launched with great fanfare March 1 at a reception in New York City, Benjamin Moore's new Century line of interior paints is intended to literally add a new dimension to walls and surfaces. It is a blend of both color and tactile experiences, Connelly explains. "For Century, we developed something called a soft-touch matte. If you touch it, it feels like a soft leather glove," he continues. "People look at their homes as retreats. ey are a break from the noise. ey want things that are soft and comfortable. We asked our- selves if there was a way to do that with the walls. We feel like we've given the impression there is actually a fabric on the wall. Because of that function, the look is very different, and the depth of color offered by having this type of texture is very unique." A company microsite, experiencecentury.com, features some deeper hues including plums, clarets and coppers, just to name a few. [Side note: For those of you still seeing gray, your eyes are not off kilter. Gray and shades of gray are still being specified by designers. In fact, Sherwin-Williams' 2017 color of the year is a brown gray called Poised Taupe.] On the one-coat hide side of the ledger, PPG Paints is excited about the launch of its PPG Paints SpeedHide, Pro-EV Zero, says Burroughs. "It is a new zero VOC formula," she notes. "It is a professional-grade product that is good for applications where you are painting an area that is occupied already. So it is low odor and no VOC. e reason it is good for pros is that it offers really good 'wet hide.' You can see instantly that you are getting the hide you are looking for. You don't have to wait until it dries. In addition, this product has really good touch-up. It allows you to touch up rather than repainting entire walls."
