elanie Boehm is not your typical
remodeler. First, she is a business
owner in an industry dominated
by men. But more to the point,
she came to be a remodeler via a nontradi-
tional path. After graduating from college in
the early '90s, and armed with a degree in
interior architecture, she took a job selling
computer software and hardware. Later, she
took a position as a project manager with an
HVAC company. Within 10 years she had
bought out the owner and expanded the busi-
ness into plumbing and electrical contracting
as a means to balance out the inherent sea-
sonality of HVAC contracting.
Today Boehm's Kankakee, Illinois-based
company, Goodberlet Home Services, also
offers bathroom remodeling. Boehm notes
doing so really only required the addition of
two carpenters. en late last year, she heard
