Master DESIGN Awards2012 Room Additions More Than $100,000 GOLD
Monarch Renovations, Des Moines, Iowa This space was originally an outside patio over a two-car
garage. During the late '70s, part of the patio was enclosed as a flat-roofed screened porch, and a huge outdoor grill with an out- of-place brick arch was built. The new addition occupies the same footprint as the former screened porch and houses a den with a brick-and-stone fireplace. The roof eaves start at 5-feet high on the north. Originally intended to avoid a window on the second floor, this decision added a sense of intimacy to the room. A shed dormer on the south side of the room brings in light and opens the room to the refurbished patio.

place where kids could play and adults could relax— large enough to entertain friends and family but inti- mate enough to settle down and read a book. More spe- cifically, the goal was to con- nect the addition to the existing home on the base- ment level while preserving the southern views of the property from the main level. The project incorporates previous site projects and continues unifying the prop- erty. The new space, the third addition to the home, blends with the modern
architecture of the home without being visually over-bearing and heavy- handed. The addition is designed to be low-maintenance and energy- efficient.

Carr & Associates, Terre Haute, Ind. The goal of the addition was to provide substantially
more indoor space for family gatherings and holiday entertaining. Window walls showcase the homeowner's garden and landscaping. The remodeler used engineered wood I-joists to ensure there would be no floor deflection when the homeowners entertained groups of 25 or more. In addition, engineered components were used in wall and roof framing as part of a green desire, as well as to provide necessary rigidity to combat wind loads for the high-volume ceilings and window walls. A full bath with custom-tiled shower was created in the attic loft space. The addition matches the details of the existing house.
