option. Modern fireplaces go way beyond the original purpose of providing heat. While this fireplace still add- ed warmth and coziness to the room, the design had to embrace the home's impressive architectural features and complement the surroundings. Extending the entire façade to include the media center created a functional, streamlined fireplace wall that was the perfect addition to this comfortable, causal and modern-day living space. In this instance, a sweeping curved wall in the great room already existed to add interest and drama to the space. e challenge and creative solutions necessary for building the fireplace involved developing concepts that were distinctive and original with a natural edge. Personalizing this setting and getting creative with ma- terials in the fireplace elevation resulted in a combination of textured metals and wavy, high-pressure laminate that is ablaze with character. First, making sure the size and shape of the fireplace wall suited the overall layout of the great room was crucial. e design also had to be inspira- tional and intriguing. Elemental details like shape, color and installation technique were all factors that definitely needed attention. Finally, finding a local metal artisan and woodworker who could work together with the designer to interpret and implement this fireplace elevation showcased the best in original design and function. Rustic simplicity defined the profile of the piece with subtle texturing; three-dimensional detailing; and float- ing, backlit panels making this fireplace a natural anchor point for the adjoining entertainment center. Finishing the metal in a complementing bronze kept in step with the neutral palette in the room's decor. When you add elements of warmth to a great room fireplace through the mixture of natural materials and finishes, the result is a cozy focal point that commands attention. Commissioning local artisans to collaborate on the specifics and construct the fireplace yielded the distinctive results that made this design an award winner.
