emodeling a dated 1960s pink master bath went from desire to necessity when a leak caused the floor to rot to the point of be- ing unsafe. e client called Steven Mark, CGBP, CAPS, senior design consultant, with San Diego-based Marrokal Design & Remodeling, to not only repair the damage but make improvements along the way to meet their goals. Mark engages his clients in a three-step process. e first step is design. "We do multiple concepts, and they provide feedback about what they like and don't like," he says. "en we refine it until we get it right. It generally takes about one month and two to three design meetings. is step also includes 3-D renderings and floor plans of the space." e second step, which also takes about a month, focus- es on obtaining permits and completing working drawings and structural engineering. Also, this includes material and product selection, and interior design. ird, and finally, is the actual build, taking about two to three months. "is particular build was part of a slightly larger project," Mark recalls, "but the bathroom took about two months." INSPIRED STYLE e couple's former Hawaiian home provided inspiration for their new master bath design to be an Asian modern minimalist style; the wife is of Japanese descent and the husband Caucasian. "It was inspired by their time spent on the island, her heritage and creating a calming almost spa-like space," Mark reminisces.
