THE CHRYSALIS AWARDS program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation's best remodeling and design work in 15 general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. e Chrysalis Awards are open to all professional remodelers and design professionals in the U.S. is year 83 remodeling and design companies were hon- ored as winners of the 2016 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. e winning projects were selected from more than 400 entries judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure. Pictures of the 2016 award-winning projects, and all winning projects since 2000, can be seen on the Chrysalis website, chrysalisawards.com. Clearly, remodeling is seeing massive growth around the country. Not only have we seen substantial growth in projects entered into competitions, but we're also seeing a much wider variation in design styles. People are taking more risks to create spaces that are tailored to their specific tastes and preferences, much more so than before the recession, which illustrates a change in thinking that will only increase opportunities for remodelers and designers into the future. e underlying force for much of this change is a return to the idea that a home is a long-term personal residence rather than a savings account. As the effects of the Great Recession have diminished, people are feeling secure enough to make their personal style, reflected by their home, a higher priority. Design is no longer encum- bered by resale concerns, but is a creative force that actualiz- es the dreams and functional desires of the owners. And while return on investment may still play a role, it's clear that people are more willing to do whatever it takes to make their home their own, with ideas that are leading designers and remodelers into some very creative situations. is renaissance is visible in the entries we are seeing in competitions. Even in the more modest entry categories we are seeing increasingly dramatic changes. People are more willing to remove what they don't need and expand on what they really want. Whether it's replacing a little-used tub with a more spacious shower and larger vanity area, or expanding baths and kitchens into bedrooms and formal dining rooms, they are willing to do much more to make their homes serve them the way they actually live. And that's good news for this industry. This year's award winners reflect the underlying force of the remodeling boom — that a home should be modeled as a personal residence By Ken Kanline 2016 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence PROJECTS: Chrysalis Awards 32 July 2016 QR QualifiedRemodeler.com
