Products Inc., which sells composite decking under its Deckorators line and pressure-treat- ed wood under its ProWood brand. "Typically it goes aesthetics, performance, then price. It has been pretty consistent that way," Camferman explains. "So to not focus a lot of your resources into the look, you are going to be left behind." Most decking manufacturers — from those marketing PVC-based products like Azek, to composite leaders like Trex, Fiberon, TimberTech and Deckorators, as well as pres- sure-treated wood leaders like Viance and ProWood — are not being left behind. Tey continually introduce new widths, lengths, colors, variegation patterns and embossing patterns in order to stay on trend. EVOLVING COLOR OPTIONS Tese days deep, rich colors and variegation patterns emulating tropical hardwoods like ipe are top sellers. Real hardwoods are heavy, often higher than $4 per lineal foot and re- quire carbide blades to cut and install, not to mention the annual maintenance, and thus they have too many negatives for all but the most well-heeled deck buyers. Meanwhile composite, PVC and even pressure-treated manufacturers have introduced products that ofer the hardwood look with less hassle and more design and installation fexibility. Fiberon's Horizon Ipe is typical of the trend, as is Trex's Havana Gold ofered in its "best" Transcend line, or in another Trex rich color, Island Mist. micronized copper, which is infused through- out each stick of lumber. Because it is infused, the cedar and redwood colors ofered with DuraColor come with a two-year color war- ranty. "So, we are guaranteeing it won't fade to a silver gray like your cedar lumber or your red- wood lumber will within a year," says Universal Forest Product's product manager Chris Fox. But not all color trends in decking are tropical. Deckorators is pushing the envelope within its Premium line of composite deck- ing by introducing oak and maple boards. Deckorator's Camferman says oak and maple, "We are in a state of constant evolution of really fne-tuning aesthetics," says Fiberon's Director of Sales Chris Hayn."Striving to get closer to the natural variegation and random chaos of tropical hardwood. As tropical hard- woods become less prevalent or more difcult to get in standard or longer lengths, we have the need and the demand to create product in longer lengths to keep that aesthetic." Even pressure-treated wood from ProWood provides color options via its DuraColor prod- uct. With ACQ treatments long gone from the scene, ProWood treats its products with DECKORATORS' Premium line of composite decking recently began offering oak and maple colors. The colors are consistent with the trend of bringing indoor finishes to outdoor spaces. Circle 5 on inquiry card NYLODECK's top selling color is Coastal Mist, shown above.
