and trim. Tey also kept the existing wood stove, built-in
cabinets and interior doors including a double pocket door.
To assure all materials remained with their assemblies, the
team labeled and tracked each piece they removed during
construction. For example, HighCraft taped trim, doors
and jambs together and marked each piece with a corre-
sponding number before storing the sections.
Te owners also wanted to retain a rustic tran-
som between the kitchen and the adjoining sitting
room installed by a previous owner. For visual con-
tinuity, HighCraft wrapped the micro-lam beam
above the kitchen post in old salvaged barn wood
that had a similar weathered look and color as the
transom. To expose the kitchen's turn-of-the-cen-
tury fr foor, the team removed newer oak and
vinyl fooring layers.
"Te original foor had several areas of black
staining so deep they couldn't be sanded away, but
the owners wanted to keep it anyway," says Winner.
"Tey found beauty in its imperfections, giving
credit to the fact that their 100-year-old foors are
still around today." New features like soapstone
countertops and a vintage-inspired range and light
fxtures complement the historic elements.
Some 2x6 framing material from the rafters was
reincorporated into the project as studs inside oth-
er interior walls and some became an Old Town
neighbor's shed.
Window placements changed with the new de-
sign and low-emissivity windows were installed
around the cottage and on the second story.
However, original front windows and a side win-
dow visible from the street were preserved and their
frames and sashes completely refurbished of-site.
pad. Te team also added an 11 7/8-in. micro-lam beam
above the post to help support the second story and trans-
fer some of the new roof loads down to the foundation.
